Der Schleier fällt, verlass die Schatten.
Ich hab mich so nach dir gesehnt.
Lass mich nicht warten.
Mach die Nacht zum Morgen.
Lass mich befreit sein und geborgen.
Lösch die Erinn’rung in mir aus,
gib meiner Seele ein Zuhaus!
Lass die Welt versinken!
Ich will mit dir im Nichts ertrinken,
und in der Ewigkeit vergeh’n...
Ich weinte, ich lachte,
war mutlos und hoffte neu.
Doch was ich auch machte,
mir selbst blieb ich immer treu.
Elisabeth & Tod:
Die Welt sucht vergebens
den Sinn meines / deines Lebens...
Elisabeth:

Elisabeth Titania-----------the real Sissi
Lena的daily report.
The topic today is what I have been looking forward to talking about because I think everyone needs the spirit that I want to tell you.
One day in December 2005, a song called Wenn Ich Tanzen Will meaning if I want to dance brought me into the world of Elisabeth. The song is the confrontation between a man and a woman. It is beautiful and powerful even though I couldn’t understand the language. It hit me at once so I tried my best to find out where it was from. However, I had never thought I could find such an impressive sentence, which is still changing my life. I mean there are so many touching girls in the world but no one can say this sentence: I belong to me!
At the beginning, I thought it was just a musical. It’s just the imagination. But I was shocked when I finished reading her story. She longed for freedom during her lifetime. She was lonely but always confident. She is Elisabeth, the empress in Austria two centuries ago. Or you may know her as Princess Sissi. But her real story is totally different from the fairy tale in the movie.
So my topic is I belong to me. Elisabeth, the real Sissi. I have loved her deeply. If you know more about her, you will become more confused because no one can understand her completely. Luckily, what we can get from the musical is her spirit that is much more precious than her beauty.
The musical Elisabeth was started in 1992. It has beautiful music, affecting story, wonderful performing and excellent setting. People say it woke up the art in Vienna. It is the all-time most successful German -language musical. Different versions go from Austria to Hungary, Holland, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Fenland and Japan. Over 300,000 people have watched the Vienna version since 2003.
This is an English leaflet of Elisabeth. Let’s see what it says. Elisabeth recounts the story of a proud empress and modern woman. Her life started out as a romantic fairytale and ended in a tragic murder. She was a dazzling young beauty of 16 when she gave her heart to the Emperor of Austria and ascended the throne. But the price she had to pay was high. Trapped in the stifling conventions of court life and the constrains of a role she could not embrace. She spent her whole life fighting for freedom and happiness. It was Death she really loved and yearned for.
Talking about that famous lady and her struggle for freedom, the musical doesn’t just recite the history. It let the murderer Lucheni stand in front of the audience and tell the story. Der Tod always stayed with her and loved her.
The dance with Der Tod is the theme in Elisabeth. Der Tod is a young and handsome man. Elisabeth loved the world of death but she never gave up her life to die. A doctor in Austria always asks his patients to watch this play to cheer up. The actors who play the role of Der Tod often received the flowers and letters to thank them for saving their lives.
Elisabeth also represents the confidence and bravery of modern women. The famous figure skater Katerina Witt who won the Olympic gold medals twice always uses the song I belong to me as the background music.
There’s a survey. 91.5% of the audience want to watch it again and 86.7% of them want to recommend it. Many tourists go to Vienna just to watch the play in person.
The story begins in modern time. A century has passed. In the imaginary death’s kingdom, a man asked the murderer Lucheni why he had killed the empress Elisabeth. Lucheni said because she was Der Tod’s lover. Then he woke up all the people at that time to prove his words. Der Tod also came and admitted he did love Elisabeth. Proved what he said, Lucheni started to tell the story of Elisabeth as the love story of Der Tod and her. From Lucheni, we know how Sisi lived happily without rules and how Sisi and Der Tod first met. Then, Lucheni took us to the palace. The emperor, Franz Joseph’s mother wanted her son to marry Sisi’s sister. However, the emperor’s marriage was out of plan. He only loved Elisabeth. Sisi was only 15 years old and she didn’t know what their marriage meant.
At the wedding, Der Tod came. He tried to let Elisabeth feel despair. At the same time, the emperor’s mother believed that she had to train Elisabeth as an empress. Sisi couldn’t bear the force and turned to Franz Joseph for help. But her husband was used to following his mother and hoped they could stop arguing. Elisabeth felt that she was deserted. Der Tod appeared again and again to invite Sisi to go with him. Sisi refused his attractive words. She was too young to give up her life. She had to fight. When she found the emperor’s mother had grabbed her children, the refuse turned into hate. She found that she had her beauty and her husband’s love as her weapon. She didn’t belong to anyone including Der Tod.
One day in the magnificent dressing room, the emperor came. He told Elisabeth that she won. She can choose who to take care of her children. Elisabeth appeared in the mirror and answered, ”You don’t need to give me anything but freedom. I only belong to me.” Her appearance in the mirror is that famous painting in 1864.
Elisabeth’s biggest success is to make Hungary and Austria become reconciled. She became the queen of Hungary. She escaped from Vienna and Der Tod.
Sisi’s traveling time started. She ignored how her husband missed her and she didn’t know how her son needed her. 18 years passed, her youth and beauty had gone.
Der Tod controlled Sisi’s son, Rudolf, to take place of his father. But Rudolf killed himself. His suicide touched Elisabeth and she begged to die. Unexpectedly, Der Tod refused her and walked away.
At the age of sixty, Der Tod finally gave the knife to Lucheni to murder Elisabeth. He won Elisabeth’s love at last and Elisabeth won the forever freedom as well.
The musical doesn’t encourage you to escape from the real life. If so, Elisabeth may have died with Der Tod immediately. You have to live for yourself to be yourself. If you’re not successful, it doesn’t matter. If you can tell you don’t regret at the end of your life, that is the most important.
So, in the end, what I want to say is “remember the sentence I belong to me”. Just be yourself. Be independent. No one can tame you or change you. I think it is one of the spirits we have to keep.
